By BBN staff: Belize is one of many countries, including Belarus, Bulgaria, Guinea and Sudan, under review at the 124th session of the United Nations Human Rights Committee scheduled for October in Geneva, Switzerland.

The committee, which is made up of independent experts appointed by the UN, will review each country’s state reports and make recommendations based on the findings of the reports.

The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights was adopted by the UN in 1966 and commits its parties to respect the civil and political rights of individuals, including the right to life, freedom of religion, freedom of expression , freedom of assembly, electoral rights and the right to due process and a fair trial.

Belize has a relatively positive record in human rights reporting, although a US State Department report last year cited several instances of assault on the media in recent years as well as allegations of corruption by government ministers.
