June is Friday Harbor LGBTQIA Rights Movement Month


Whereas, June is designated as Pride Month across the country to commemorate the Stonewall Uprising of 1969, a period generally recognized as the start of the modern LGBTQIA rights movement; and

Whereas, all people, regardless of age, gender identity, race, color, religion, marital status, national origin, sexual orientation or physical disability, have the right to be treated basis of their intrinsic value as human beings; and

Whereas, despite their extraordinary advances in basic civil and human rights, LGBTQ+ Americans still face discrimination simply because they are who they are; and

Whereas, the City is committed to protecting the most vulnerable among us and supporting the visibility, dignity and equality of all people in our community, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression; and

Whereas, the city welcomes and celebrates the history and diversity of Friday Harbor’s LGBTQ+ community; and

So nowI, Raymont C. Jackson, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of Friday Harbor, do hereby proclaim June 2022 in the city as

otherwiseI encourage all citizens to reflect on this important moment in our nation’s history, to eliminate prejudice wherever it exists, to respect the rights of all, and to celebrate the great diversity of our city.
