Three days after 50 migrants landed at Martha’s Vineyard as part of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ deportation program, Lawyers for Civil Rights called on U.S. Attorney Rachael Rollins and Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey to open a criminal investigation into what they called a “political stunt”. ”
In a press release on Saturday, LCR said they now represent more than 30 of the migrants who received food and shelter upon their unexpected arrival at Martha’s Vineyard last week. According to LCR, the migrants were persuaded to board planes and cross state lines under false pretences, alleging that state officials, including DeSantis, had promised the group work opportunities, tuition and immigration assistance.
According to LCR, those who had made the initial promises to the migrants broke off contact once the two planes had landed, “letting the immigrants learn that the offers of assistance had all been a ruse to exploit them for political gain”.
“Particularly given the deliberate, intentional and concerted nature of the interference by state actors in federal immigration enforcement, the LCR emphasizes that a strong and coordinated federal response is necessary,” the statement reads in part. .
LCR also states that several members of its staff have been harassed; in addition to alleging that the organization’s website was sabotaged as lawyers escorted migrants out of Martha’s Vineyard.
